New construction electrical

Krinkie's licensed electricians wire new homes and additions in the Twin Cities metro, from the electrical plan to the final inspection. We work with builders and owners who are building their own home.

What we wire in a new home

We install the complete electrical system: the service equipment and panel, branch circuits for lighting and outlets, dedicated circuits for appliances and heating and cooling equipment, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and exterior lighting and outlets. We also wire for the equipment you plan to add later, such as an EV charger in the garage.

Because Krinkie's also installs heating, cooling and plumbing equipment, we can plan the circuits for your furnace, heat pump, ductless mini-split or water heater together with the equipment itself.

Planning the electrical system

Good planning happens before framing. We review the plans with you or your builder, mark the location of each outlet, switch, light and appliance, and size the service for the loads in the house. If you plan to add a heat pump, an electric range or an EV charger, tell us now. Sizing the service and panel for those loads during construction is simpler than an upgrade later.

The finished plan gives the framers, HVAC installers and plumbers a clear picture of where the wiring will run, so the trades can work in the right order. It also gives you a record of every circuit, which helps with future repairs and additions.

Rough-in, inspections and power-up

Minnesota law requires the request for electrical inspection to be filed at or before the start of the work. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry requires rough-in inspections before any wiring is concealed by insulation, drywall, ceiling coverings or trench backfill, and a final inspection when the work is done. We schedule these inspections and tell the builder when the walls are clear to close.

New wiring must meet the electrical code in effect when the permit is filed. Minnesota adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code for permits filed on or after Aug. 17, 2026.

Before the utility installs the meter and energizes a new service, it needs an inspection release or certificate showing the installation was inspected. We coordinate that step with the inspector and the utility.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Minnesota law requires each smoke alarm in new dwelling construction to be connected to a centralized power source. State law also requires a carbon monoxide alarm within 10 feet of each room used for sleeping. We install and connect these alarms as part of the job. See our smoke and CO detector installation page for details.

Building your own home

Minnesota law lets an owner who will live in a new single-family home with its own electrical service do the electrical work personally, with a permit and inspections. If you take that route for part of the house, we can still install the service, the panel and the more complex circuits. Our electricians are licensed, background-checked and drug-tested.

Signs it is time to bring in an electrician

  • Your house plans are close to final and the layout is set
  • You need the service and panel sized for heat pumps, an electric range or an EV charger
  • Framing is scheduled and the rough-in has to follow
  • You are building an addition that needs its own circuits
  • You are building your own home and want help with the service and panel

Common questions

Do you work with builders or only homeowners?

Both. We work with general contractors and with owners who are managing their own build.

What inspections does a new home need for electrical work?

Minnesota requires rough-in inspections before wiring is concealed and a final inspection when the work is complete. Some projects also need inspections for trenches or bonding before they are covered.

Should I wire for an EV charger even if I don't own an electric vehicle?

It is easier to install the circuit or the conduit while the walls and garage are open. We can talk through the options during the plan review.

Can you also install the heating, cooling and water heater?

Yes. Krinkie's installs heating, cooling and plumbing equipment, so we can coordinate the equipment and its circuits in one plan.
