Whole-home humidifiers

Minnesota winters dry out your air. A whole-home humidifier adds the moisture your home and family need.

Comfort and protection

Balanced humidity eases dry skin, itchy eyes and sore throats, and helps protect wood floors, furniture and trim from cracking.

Installed with your furnace

A whole-home humidifier works with your heating system, so there are no portable units to fill.

Signs your air is too dry

  • Itchy eyes or a dry throat
  • Frequent static shocks
  • Cracking wood floors or trim
  • Dry, irritated skin

Common questions

What affects the cost of a whole-home humidifier?

Cost depends on the type (bypass, fan-powered or steam), the control you choose, how far the unit is from a water line and drain, and whether your furnace and ductwork need modifications. Steam models also need electrical service.

What humidity level should I set in winter?

Set it lower as it gets colder outside to prevent window condensation. University of Minnesota guidelines suggest a maximum of about 40 percent at 20°F to 40°F outside and about 25 percent between -10°F and 0°F.

What maintenance does a whole-home humidifier need?

Most evaporative models need the water panel replaced at least once each heating season, and some models need it more often. A technician can inspect the humidifier, its drain and its control during a fall furnace tune-up.

Can a humidifier be added to my existing furnace?

In most homes with a forced-air furnace, yes. A technician will check your furnace, ductwork, water supply and drain access to confirm which model fits.
