Electrical service upgrades

Krinkie's licensed electricians upgrade the electrical service on Twin Cities homes so the house can safely carry the load you have now and the equipment you plan to add. We handle the permit, the inspection and the coordination with your utility.

What an electrical service upgrade includes

Your electrical service is the equipment that brings power from the utility into your home: the service conductors, the meter socket, the main disconnect and the panel that feeds your circuits. A service upgrade replaces that equipment with parts rated for a higher amperage, so the house can supply more electricity at the same time without overloading.

A service upgrade is a bigger job than a panel swap. We often replace the panel as part of the work, but a panel upgrade or replacement on its own does not raise the capacity coming from the utility. A service upgrade does.

When a home needs more capacity

Most service upgrades start with a new electric load. Common examples are a heat pump, an electric vehicle charger, an electric range, an electric water heater, a finished basement or an addition. Before you buy the equipment, we review the existing service, add up the loads already in the house and the loads you plan to add, and tell you whether the current service can carry them.

If the numbers work, you may not need an upgrade at all. If they do not, we explain which service size fits your plans and why. If you are planning a heat pump installation or an EV charger installation, ask us to check the service at the same visit.

Permits, inspection and your utility

Minnesota law requires the request for electrical inspection to be filed at or before the start of the work. Depending on your city, the inspection is done by a state electrical inspector or by the city's own inspector, as in St. Paul. We file the request and schedule the inspections.

Your utility also has requirements. Xcel Energy will not install a meter on a socket that does not meet its standards, and it requires an inspection release before it energizes a service that has been rewired, altered or repaired. We coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with the utility so the power is off for as short a time as the work allows.

A new service must meet the electrical code in effect when the permit is filed. Minnesota adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code for permits filed on or after Aug. 17, 2026. Current code requires a surge protective device on services that supply a home and an outdoor emergency disconnect for one- and two-family homes, so we include both when the code calls for them.

Why this is not a do-it-yourself job

Service work involves conductors that you cannot shut off from inside the house. Only the utility can de-energize them. Mistakes can cause shock, burns or a fire, and they can keep the utility from reconnecting your power.

Minnesota law allows an owner who lives in a single-family home with its own electrical service to do electrical work there under a permit and inspection. Even so, we strongly recommend that a licensed electrician handle every service upgrade. Do not open the meter socket, cut the meter seal or work on the service conductors yourself.

How to schedule a service upgrade

Call 651-488-5555 to request an appointment. Tell us what equipment you plan to add and the age of your current service if you know it. Our electricians are licensed, background-checked and drug-tested, and we serve homes across the seven-county Twin Cities metro.

Signs you need a service upgrade

  • You plan to add a heat pump, EV charger, electric range or electric water heater
  • Breakers trip when several large appliances run at the same time
  • Your panel has no open spaces and you need new circuits
  • You are finishing a basement or building an addition
  • Lights dim when the air conditioner, dryer or another large appliance starts
  • Your service equipment is damaged, corroded or was pulled loose by a storm

Common questions

How do I know what size electrical service I have?

The main breaker in your panel is usually labeled with its amperage. Because labels and equipment can be mismatched, we confirm the actual service size during the visit.

Will my power be off during a service upgrade?

Yes, for part of the job. The utility has to disconnect the service while we replace the equipment, and power returns after the work passes the inspection and release steps.

Do I always need a service upgrade to add a heat pump or EV charger?

No. Many homes have enough capacity. We calculate your existing and planned loads first and only recommend an upgrade when the numbers require it.

Who pulls the permit?

We file the request for electrical inspection and schedule the required inspections with the state or city inspector.
