Home EV charger installation

Licensed electricians install Level 2 EV chargers and dedicated charging circuits in your garage or driveway. We check your panel capacity first, then wire, permit, and test the charger.

Level 1 or Level 2 charging

Level 1 charging uses a standard outlet. The U.S. Department of Energy says Level 1 charging can work with an outlet on a dedicated branch circuit near where you park, and that overnight Level 1 charging meets daily driving needs for many owners.

Level 2 charging uses 240-volt equipment for a faster charge. It needs a new circuit from your panel, and some homes do not have enough electrical capacity for it. A qualified electrician can tell you whether your home has the capacity and add the circuit.

What the installation involves

We start with a load calculation. It compares what your home already uses with what your panel and electric service can supply. If capacity is short, options include a charger with load management, a panel upgrade or replacement, or a service upgrade coordinated with your utility.

The electrical code treats EV charging as a continuous load, so the breaker and wire are sized at 125% of the charger's rated load. Each EV charging outlet must be on its own branch circuit with no other outlets. We install a hardwired charger or a 240-volt receptacle, depending on the charger maker's instructions, and mount it where the cable reaches your vehicle's charge port.

Minnesota's Board of Electricity adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code with an effective date of Aug. 17, 2026. We install to the code edition that applies to your permit.

Permits, inspection, and safety

Minnesota law requires electrical work to be done by a licensed electrician working for a licensed contractor, with a narrow exception for homeowners who personally do the work on a single home they own and live in that has its own electric service. New electrical installations must be inspected. We file the permit and schedule the inspection with the state or your city, whichever has authority at your address.

Do not charge an EV from an extension cord or add a 240-volt circuit yourself. Stop charging and call right away if the plug, outlet, or breaker feels hot, you smell burning, or the breaker trips during charging. For urgent problems, use our 24/7 emergency electrical service.

Xcel Energy programs and the federal tax credit

Xcel Energy offers EV charging programs for Minnesota customers. Its Optimize Your Charge program lets residential customers choose an overnight charging window, either 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. or 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and earn an annual bill credit for charging during that window. Enrollment includes an application on Xcel Energy's website, and eligibility depends on your vehicle. Check Xcel Energy's current Minnesota EV program terms before you buy a charger.

The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (Section 30C) has ended for new home installations. IRS instructions state that the credit cannot be claimed for charging equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026.

To book an installation, call 651-488-5555 or request an estimate online. Tell us your vehicle, your charger if you have one, and where you park.

Signs you need a home EV charger

  • You bought or ordered an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid
  • Level 1 charging does not refill your battery overnight
  • You are charging from an extension cord
  • A breaker trips or a plug gets warm while charging
  • A second EV is coming to your household
  • You want to charge in a detached garage or at the driveway

Common questions

Do I need a Level 2 charger?

Not always. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that overnight Level 1 charging meets daily driving needs for many owners. Level 2 makes sense if you drive farther each day, have a larger battery, or need faster charging.

Will I need a panel or service upgrade?

Not always. We do a load calculation first. If capacity is short, a charger with load management may avoid an upgrade; if not, we explain the panel or service work involved.

Is the federal EV charger tax credit still available?

No, not for new installations. IRS instructions state that the Section 30C credit cannot be claimed for property placed in service after June 30, 2026.

Does Xcel Energy have home EV charging programs in Minnesota?

Yes. Xcel Energy's Optimize Your Charge program pays an annual bill credit to enrolled residential customers who charge during a chosen overnight window. Check Xcel Energy's website for current terms and eligibility.
